Wolfpackers rewarded for maintaining a 3.5 GPA for the year
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Current NC State softball senior Lana Van Dyken and former standout Emily Weiman have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the NFCA.
Â
The award is given annually to student-athletes that have maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or better for the academic year.
Â
Van Dyken compiled a 3.942 GPA during the 2014-15 academic year, while also being one of six players on the team to appear in all 60 games. The Wolfpack's starting third baseman hit .255 for the season, but raised her level of play during ACC play to record a .302 clip against conference foes.
Â
The Puyallup, Wash., native drew 36 walks, the second most on the team and led the Pack with three triples on the year. Van Dyken is majoring in biological sciences.
Â
Weiman, who was also named the ACC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for softball, finished her senior year with a 3.985 GPA and graduated in May of 2015 with a degree in sport management. On the field, the Pasadena, Md., native collected First Team All-ACC honors for the third consecutive season.
Â
She tallied a 31-17 mark in the circle and finished her career with 108 wins, the most in NC State softball history. Weiman also departed the program as the record holder in numerous other pitching categories, highlighted by most wins in a season (33), strikeouts in a season (322) and strikeouts in a single game (18).
Â
Last season, NC State advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in program history after winning the NCAA Harrisonburg (Va.) Regional with a perfect 3-0 record. The Pack earned its best finish in school history in the process, as it was listed at No. 19 in both of the final top-25 polls.
Â
The squad welcomes four freshmen as well as a transfer to the team for 2016, while four seniors departed due to graduation or exhausted eligibility.
