Wolfpack ends fall play with a perfect 8-0 record
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team collected a pair of wins against the Elon Phoenix on Friday night at Dail Stadium to conclude its fall schedule undefeated at 8-0. The Wolfpack won game one of the twin bill, 9-3, before earning a 4-0 shutout win in game two.
The Pack opened its fall slate with a pair of wins at Campbell and then collected two wins each at home against Pitt Community College, Longwood and Elon to complete its fall schedule perfect with an 8-0 mark.
Game One Highlights
- NC State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a solo home run by Cheyenne Blazer. The freshman fell behind early in the count, but worked the count full and fouled off a couple of pitches before blasting one to right center.
- Elon pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the third inning, but Wolfpack junior Hanna Sommer knotted the score at two with a solo homer to left center in the fourth inning.
- The Phoenix tacked on a run in the fifth to take a 3-2 advantage, but the Pack responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead for good.
- Junior Molly Hutchison hit a sacrifice fly to center field and sophomore Meredith Burroughs doubled down the right field line, scoring two runs on the play to give NC State a 5-3 lead.
- Tyler Ross cranked a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 8-3 in favor of the Wolfpack. The junior from Cameron, N.C., smacked the 2-1 pitch over the fence in left center to collect three RBI.
- NC State elected to hit in the bottom of the seventh even though the outcome of the game had already been decided and freshman Brittany Nimmo had an RBI single to give the Wolfpack the 9-3 victory.
- Junior Courtney Mirabella started game one in the circle and pitched the first five innings to earn the win. She struck out three batters and allowed three earned runs.
- Harli Hubbard relieved Mirabella in the sixth and pitched the final two innings to pick up the save. She retired eight of the nine batters she faced.
Game Two Highlights
- The second game was tightly contested, as neither team scored in the first four innings. Junior Hannah Yeager belted a solo home run in the fifth to break the deadlock and give NC State a 1-0 lead.
- Ross put the Wolfpack ahead, 3-0, with a two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Lana Van Dyken led off the inning with a single and scored on Ross' blast.
- Sophomore Meredith Burroughs joined the home run parade later in the sixth with a solo home run down the right field line to give the Pack a 4-0 lead, which stood as the final tally.
- Nimmo went the distance for the NC State in game two of the doubleheader. The freshman struck out seven batters, allowed five hits and only one walk in a dominating performance.
