Wolfpack Continues Road Trip In Weekend Matches

The 31st-ranked Wolfpack men’s tennis team continues its road trip as it heads to Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Friday, Jan. 30, to take on Jackson State and Middle Tennessee State. NC State will open play at 10:00 a.m. against Jackson State, then play again at 3 p.m. against Middle Tennessee State.
Last Time Out:
The team lost a pair of hard-fought matches to No. 23 Mississippi State and No. 32 Harvard. Both matches ended 4-3, but the Wolfpack took down some highly rated singles and doubles opponents.
No. 19 Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge upset Harvard’s No. 7 Dennis Nguyen and Brain Yueng while No. 51 Austin Powell defeated No. 57 Nguyen in singles. In the match against Mississippi State, No. 123 Mudge knocked off No. 63 Tassilo Schmid.
Scouting Report
Middle Tennessee State
- The Pack is 1-2 against MTSU all time. The Pack played MTSU last in 2013, which it lost 4-3.
- The Blue Raiders are undefeated early in the season at 2-0.
- MTSU is a veteran team with six upperclassmen including four seniors.
- Their entire team was born outside of the United States.
- Norfolk State transfer and two-time NSU team MVP Dima Zyhmantovich joined the squad after the 2014 spring season.
Jackson State
- This is the first time in program history that NC State will face Jackson State.
- The Tigers are a young team with only one upperclassman on the roster for the 2015 season.

Record Watch
In his senior season, Austin Powell continues to make his mark on the record books. Powell is now fifth all time in singles wins with 80 wins total, he needs just six more to enter into a tie for fourth place all time.
Senior Robbie Mudge is also entering the record books in singles and doubles. His 68 single wins put him 10th all-time, while his 73 doubles victories rank fourth in all-time doubles victories.
This weekend, Mudge and Dempster can enter the top-10 list of doubles victories in a season. The duo is only two wins away from breaking into the list.
