RALEIGH – The NC State women’s soccer team (2-3-0) picked up its second home win of the season on Thursday night, defeating the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (3-2-0) by a final score of 3-0.
Three different Wolfpackers found the back of the net in the win, as Brittany Stanko (first goal of the season), Kayla Saager (third), and Jessica Baity (first) helped State to a comfortable win. Outshooting the Chanticleers by a 20-12 margin, the Wolfpack received its first shutout of the season from goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes (four saves).
In two matches against the Chanticleers (2010 and 2014 seasons), the Wolfpack has earned two victories while scoring 10 goals and allowing zero.
“Tonight marks the first time we’ve scored first in a game, our first shutout, and the first time we’ve scored three goals,” said NC State head coach Tim Santoro. “Those are the positives.
“It was a bit of a sloppy game. There wasn’t anything too consistent which we put together. That said, we’ll take the win.”
Lightning was detected within eight miles of Dail Soccer Field in the 31st minute of the match, resulting in a 50-minute delay. Very shortly after the delay, Stanko put the Wolfpack up 1-0 in the 35th minute with a low shot to the far post. Her tally was assisted by teammate Caroline Gentry, who recorded six total shots on the night.
State doubled its lead in the 80th minute when Saager scored her team leading third goal of the season. Gentry crossed a ball into the penalty area from the left wing and a clearance was attempted by the Coastal Carolina defense. The clearance was unsuccessful, falling right to Saager, who took a few touches and beat the goalkeeper to the far post.
“I’m just happy that I can come in and support the team,” Saager said. “The freshman class is doing great this year and I’m happy to help out.”
Baity put the match away in the 89th minute, scoring the fourth goal of her career to make it 3-0. Following a nice pass from Saager, Baity took two touches to shake her defender inside the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper to the near post.
NC State will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 7 at William & Mary. Kickoff from Williamsburg, Va., is set for 2 p.m.
