WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The NC State women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at William & Mary on Sunday afternoon.
Junior defender Dayna Tomayko scored the first goal of her career in the loss. State (2-4-0) held a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break but the Tribe (2-1-1) pieced together a very strong second half in which it recorded 11 total shots and two goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes had a strong outing on Sunday, making eight saves throughout the course of the match.
“It’s a disappointing result today,” head coach Tim Santoro said of the match. “We were in complete control for a half but by the end of the second half we deserved to lose the game.”
The Wolfpack held a majority of the possession in the first half, working its way up the field on numerous occasions. State’s pressure paid off in the 37th minute when junior Dayna Tomayko scored the first goal of her career from well outside the penalty area. The Stafford, Va., native unleashed a hard shot from 25 yards away which beat goalkeeper Caroline Casey to the top corner.
“Our spacing and passing were both good in the first half,” Santoro said. “Dayna is a good player and with our system, she should be getting into the attack often. She does it consistently and her goal today was well deserved.”
On the other side of halftime, William & Mary stepped up its offensive pressure and was rewarded with a goal in the 60th minute. Rachel Moore of the Tribe was denied once from close range due to a clever goal line clearance from Kayla Saager, but her second attempt found the back of the net just a few seconds later.
William & Mary scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute when Haley Kavanaugh’s run up the middle of the field was rewarded by a cross from her teammate. Kavanaugh was able to hit a shot first time just inside the six-yard box to beat Stelljes and give her side the 2-1 advantage.
NC State will next be in action on Thursday, Sept. 11 at home against Western Carolina. The Wolfpack and Catamounts will kick off from Dail Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
