RALEIGH – Despite jumping out to an early lead just five minutes into the match, the NC State women’s soccer team was held to a 1-1 draw in double overtime by the visiting Western Carolina Catamounts Thursday evening at Dail Soccer Field.
Junior defender Dayna Tomayko scored her second career goal in the match. Not only was it the second tally of her career, but it was her second in two matches, as the native of Stafford, Va., also scored in NC State’s recent match at William & Mary on Sept. 7.
The Wolfpack (2-4-1) dominated large portions of the match, outshooting the Catamounts (1-3-3) by a 15-10 margin and earning 10 corners to Western Carolina’s three. Seven different Wolfpackers recorded at least one shot throughout the course of the match while three—Tomayko, Kayla Saager, and Caroline Gentry—each recorded two shots or more. Gentry led all field players with five attempts, three of which were on target.
“I’m disappointed (in this result),” said head coach Tim Santoro. “This is a game we should have won. It’s a game we had control of in the first half. I told the team that if you don’t put a team like that away, it’s a one-goal game and it only takes one goal to get back in it.”
State took an early lead in the fifth minute of the match at the end of an impressive passing sequence. German freshman Franziska Jaser fed the ball to Jenna Kalwa, who took a touch and played a pass behind the defense to an onrushing Tomayko. Quickly taking a touch and beating the diving goalkeeper, Tomayko gave the Pack a deserved early 1-0 lead.
“I love it. It’s great to know that I can contribute to my team in a different way than just defending,” Tomayko said when asked about her second goal in two matches.
The Pack would keep up its pressure throughout the rest of the half, outshooting the Catamounts by a 7-2 margin.
As the humidity began to take its toll on both sides during the second half, play slowed over the course of the final 15 minutes of regulation. Earning a free kick in the attacking third, the visitors would capitalize in the 83rd minute of the match when Kelly Pannell’s near post run was rewarded by a nice pass from teammate Amanda Schwartz. Pannell took a quick shot, beating goalkeeper Karly Gustafson to the near post to level the contest.
The two teams battled through 20 minutes of scoreless overtime play, with neither side finding the decisive goal to end up on top. Gustafson made two saves in each overtime period and ended the evening with six stops.
NC State will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 14 at UNC Greensboro. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Spartans is set for 7 p.m.
