RALEIGH, N.C.- Recently, Gopack.com had the opportunity to catch up with former women’s tennis standout Joelle Kissell about what she has been up to since she graduated from NC State.
The four-year letter-winner currently holds the all-time dual singles record of 60 wins. She was also the first in program history to become a three-time All-ACC selection.
Currently residing in Orlando, Fla., Kissell graduated in May with a Communications Media major and a Spanish minor, maintaining a 3.845 GPA during her tenure.
Since graduating from NC State: “I was fortunate enough to receive an internship from Fox Sports in Florida working in the production department. The internship didn't start until August so I was able to relax, spend time with my family, play in some professional tournaments and sleep a lot during the summer.
What she misses about collegiate tennis: “I miss so much about college tennis: the atmosphere during game day, the relationships with my teammates, coaches, trainers, academic support, the clothing and basically everything. Well not everything; 7 a.m. workouts, that I don't miss.”
The one thing she misses about NC State and the Raleigh area: Howling Cow Ice Cream
Her plans to give back to tennis and stay involved in the sport: “I definitely want to help give back to tennis. Tennis has given me so much, taken me to so many places and provided me opportunities that I wouldn't have had if it weren't for my ability with a racket. I currently am teaching tennis to elementary school kids on Saturdays and I feel like that is a good start to giving back to the sport that I love so much by helping children get the same opportunities that I was blessed with.”
How NC State prepared her for life after college: “NC State shaped who I am today. Being a student athlete there I learned so much about time management and the importance of performing under pressure.”
“Along with learning life skills like the laundry doesn't do itself and gas isn't cheap, I also learned about commitment, hard work and self-confidence. I was very lucky to have a coach who not only helped me develop as a player but also as a person and you don't find that at every school. I am so grateful to NC State for that because the lessons I learned help me everyday in the office and out of the office.”
