GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The NC State softball team suffered its first defeat in its last nine games, as the sixth-ranked Florida Gators were able to snap the Wolfpack’s eight-game winning streak with a 10-0 win Saturday afternoon at Pressly Stadium.
The Wolfpack falls to 26-11 on the year, while No. 6 Florida improves to 37-8.
Florida jumped out to a quick lead in the contest after scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. The Gators received hits in the inning from leadoff hitter Kelsey Stewart, cleanup hitter Lauren Haeger and Taylor Schwarz before a three-run homer by Briana Little.
The Gators plated another run in the second and an additional four in the bottom of the fourth. NC State looked to start a rally in the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles from freshman Molly Hutchison and sophomore Hanna Sommer. Unfortunately for the Pack, Florida was able to get the next hitter to bounce into a double play before a swinging strikeout ended the inning.
Junior Emily Weiman started the contest and was relieved by freshman Courtney Mirabella, who recorded three strikeouts and retired the side in order in the third.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, April 16 with a home doubleheader against UNCW. Game one is set for 4 p.m. with the second game to follow.
