RALEIGH, N.C. - In a game which featured 10 ties and six lead changes, the No. 14 NC State women's basketball team (20-3, 7-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) picked up a hard-fought league victory over visiting Wake Forest, winning by a final score of 74-69 at Kay Yow Court within Reynolds Coliseum.
The win was NC State's fourth straight ACC victory. State has won six of its last seven contests and remains a spotless 13-0 at home this season.
Senior guard Myisha Goodwin-Coleman surpassed 1,000 career points in the win, becoming just the 30th NC State student-athlete in program history to do so. She scored 16 points on the night in large part due to 4-8 shooting from three-point range, and was one of four Wolfpackers to score 14 points or more. Markeisha Gatling scored a game-high 19 while Len'Nique Brown (14 points) and Kody Burke (14 points, 11 rebounds) each had strong offensive games.
NC State took great care of the ball in the victory, dishing out 16 assists while committing just nine turnovers. Thursday's game marked the fourth time this season that State committed nine or fewer turnovers in a single game.
Gatling started well from the field, hitting four of her first six field goal attempts to give the Pack an early 8-6 lead 7:14 into the contest. The Pack spread the ball well during the early stages of the game, recording four assists on these four made field goals.
The teams battled through multiple ties and lead changes before Goodwin-Coleman scored her 10th point of the evening with 4:42 left in the half to bring the Wolfpack within four points (28-24). Her 10th point of the night precisely marked the 1,000th of her career.
Wake Forest took the lead midway through the first half and extended its advantage to as many as six points (28-22) with 4:58 remaining in the opening stanza. NC State ended the frame on an 11-5 run to take a tie score of 33-33 into the halftime break.
Trailing 41-38 early in the second half, NC State ripped off an 8-0 run over the course of 87 seconds to take a 46-41 advantage. Key during this run were two three-pointers, one by Goodwin-Coleman which was immediately followed by one from Burke.
State kept Wake Forest (12-11, 3-7 ACC) at bay for much of the remainder of the contest, but the Demon Deacons had the ball trailing by three with less than 30 seconds to play. Chelsea Douglas attempted a three-pointer with 11 seconds left, but her shot went wide and Burke was able to collect the rebound, suffer a foul, and sink two free throws at the other end to seal the victory.
NC State will next be in action on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Virginia Tech. Tip-off between the No. 14 Wolfpack and the Hokies is set for 2 p.m.
