RALEIGH - Thanks to a made jump shot and free throw by Carlee Schuhmacher with five seconds remaining, the NC State women's basketball team (8-3) defeated the Liberty Flames by a final score of 67-64 Wednesday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum.
Schuhmacher led the way for the Wolfpack with a game-high 17 points on a career-high eight made field goals. Dominique Wilson (13 points), Miah Spencer (11), and Krystal Barrett (11) joined Schuhmacher in double-figure scoring on their strong offensive outings.
As a team, NC State shot 23-51 (.451) from the field and 18-26 (.692) from the free throw line. Its Liberty counterpart shot 25-53 (.472) from the field and 8-10 (.800) from the charity stripe.
The first half was a close contest, as NC State never led by more than seven points (18-11) and the score was tied seven times. The seventh tie of the game came with 1:48 to go in the half (25-25), but a made jump shot by Schuhmacher followed by a made three-pointer by Ashley Williams gave the Wolfpack a 30-27 advantage going into the locker room despite being outrebounded by a 24-12 margin.
The Pack started the second half with a quick 5-0 run as Barrett made two layups and converted from the charity stripe. Liberty battled back and would take its largest lead of the game (41-38) with 13:08 remaining, but the Pack would use an 11-0 run to reclaim an eight-point advantage with 8:57 to play.
Liberty was able to erase the deficit and tie things up at 64 apiece with 29 seconds left in the game, but a jump shot through contact and the ensuing free throw by Schuhmacher sealed the win for the Wolfpack.
"I felt like today was my day," Schuhmacher said. "I was very comfortable out there and I was hot shooting from the inside."
NC State will return to action when it hosts Davidson on Dec. 19 inside Reynolds Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
