RALEIGH, N.C.- Mexico City native Barbara Mancera has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to join the NC State women’s tennis program for the 2015-16 season, as announced by first-year head coach Simon Earnshaw.
“Barbara is a player that impressed me tremendously during the recruiting process,” Earnshaw said. “I look for a specific type of athlete and player that fits what we are working to achieve as a program. Barbara shares similar expectations and will be an integral member of this initial recruiting class.”
“With her level of athleticism, she will contribute immediately in singles and in doubles. Gina [Suarez-Malaguti] and I look forward to Barbara arriving on campus next August and for her NC State career to get underway,” Earnshaw added.
Having been ranked as high as No. 4 in the junior division in Mexico and listed at No. 700 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) rankings, Mancera is the second recruit to sign with the program in the early signing period.
She holds three national titles in doubles play in Puebla, Guadalajara and San Luis, and has also won the Under 16 Clay Courts National Championship tournament in Guadalajara. Mancera has compiled a 17-9 overall record against some of the highest-rated American players, including a recent straight-set win in tournament play against the player that was the top seed in the 2014 USTA National Championships Girls’ 16 hard courts division.
“I feel very fortunate to get the chance to play at NC State,” Mancera said. “Simon and Gina have a lot of experience as coaches and as players. Together, I know they will take the program to the top of the rankings. NC State offers the perfect balance between athletics and academics and I’m very excited to be a part of the Wolfpack.”
