RALEIGH – Led by a co-first-place finish from David Cooke, the NC State men’s golf team picked up the 51st team championship in program history on Tuesday afternoon, earning a nine-stroke victory at the 2014 Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
NC State’s “A” team shot a 280 (-4) on Tuesday to end with a final tournament score of 846 (-6). The Wolfpack was the only team among the 18-team field to finish the tournament under par. East Tennessee State (855, +3) and No. 32 East Carolina (863, +11) earned second and third at the competition.
Cooke shot a career-best score of 67 (-4) in the third round to tie with East Tennessee State’s Adrian Meronk for tournament champion honors. The individual title is the first in Cooke’s career and marks the 87th time in program history that a Wolfpacker has finished first in a competition.
Carter Page (T11) and Stanhope Johnson (T14) were the next two finishers on State’s “A” team. Johnson tied a career-best with his 68 on Tuesday. Jacob McBride (T33) and James Chapman (T33) each finished with three-round scores of 222 (+9) to end the tournament.
NC State’s “Red” team also had a strong showing at the tournament, placing eighth among the 18 teams. The second group of Wolfpack golfers was led by freshman Carter Simon, who tied for 11th with a three-round score of 215 (+2). Colby Lyles (T22) also finished within the top half of the field while teammates Wilson Day (59th), Andrew Decker (T74), and William Herring (89th) participated at the event.
The Wolfpack will close out the fall season at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson, Tenn. The three-day tournament will begin on Oct. 10 and end on Oct. 12.
