Powell Named ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Austin Powell of the 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday morning.
A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Powell completed action at the Wolfpack Invite with a 2-0 record in singles competition, as well as a 3-1 mark in doubles. The junior concluded the weekend with an upset of 25th-ranked Cameron Silverman of Elon, 6-2, 5-6, 6-4, on Sunday, while also defeating William & Mary’s Will Juggins in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. For the season, Powell owns a team-leading 12-6 record, including four victories against ranked opponents.
In doubles, Powell teamed with classmate Beck Bond to capture a 2-0 record for the weekend, while playing to a 1-1 ledger with freshman Nick Horton.
The Pack will open its 2014 dual season on Jan. 18, as the squad plays a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro and NC Central. Play is slated to begin at 10 a.m. against UNCG, while the match against the Eagles is set for 2 p.m. Part of the squad will also travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to compete in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup from Jan. 17-20.
