RALEIGH, N.C. - For the first time since the 1983 season, the NC State Wolfpack men's tennis team will take on the Auburn Tigers. The NCAA Championships first-round match is slated for noon (EST) on Friday, May 10 at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma.
The two teams have never met in the NCAA Championships, but have competed against each other four times during the regular season with State holding a 3-1 edge. Both teams received at-large bids to the NCAA tournament after remaining among the top tier of teams in the ITA polls.
The Wolfpack makes its sixth overall NCAA appearance and fourth under head coach Jon Choboy. In his 11th season at NC State, Choboy also led the Pack to the tournament in 2006, 2007 and 2012. State previously made the tournament in 1978 and 1999. The Pack has collected three NCAA wins in program history.
The Tigers finished 10th in the SEC with a 5-7 record and lost, 4-1, to Vanderbilt in the first round of the SEC Tournament. Auburn and NC State played five common opponents during the regular season, with both teams collecting victories over Georgia Tech and Indiana, while each came up short against Ole Miss and South Carolina. The final common opponent was Clemson whom the Pack beat 4-2 during the regular season and lost to by the same margin in the ACC Championship. Auburn lost a 5-2 decision to Clemson.
The winner of the match will advance to play the winner of host Oklahoma and Wichita State. The second round match is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST on Saturday, May 11.
