GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State men's tennis sophomores Robbie Mudge and Austin Powell have been named to the 2013 All-ACC team, announced Thursday by the conference office.
Hailing from Winston-Salem, N.C., Mudge has split time at the top spot in the lineup with Powell. Mudge collected eight wins in dual singles matches and also won three matches against conference opponents. His win against Gabriel Flores of Miami on March 31 proved to be the momentum shifter as his win tied the match, 2-2, and the Wolfpack went on to win the match, 5-2.
On the season, NC State is 6-1 in contests when Mudge wins his singles match. He also collected a tough three-set win against then 18th-ranked Florida State as he defeated Benjamin Lock, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Powell, a native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., leads the team in singles victories with 21, and is tied for the club lead with 12 dual singles wins along with Beck Bond, Sean Weber and Thomas Weigel. Against conference opponents, Powell posted a team-best 7-3 record which included upset wins over Florida State's 109th-ranked Dominic Cotrone and then 124th-ranked Brett Clark of UNC.
He went the entire month of March without a loss, collecting seven victories, and also put together an eight-match winning streak spanning from Feb. 23 - March 31.
On April 2, Powell was rewarded for his efforts on the court with his first ACC Player of the Week award. The sophomore went 3-0 the week prior, collecting singles wins against Wisconsin, Florida State and Miami.
For the first time since 2008, the Wolfpack had multiple players selected to the All-ACC team. In 2008, James McGee and Jay Weinacker were named to the team.
