Pack Smacks 3 HRs in 8-0 Win Over Campbell in First Game
Dent had a pair of three-run homers in the second game to give the Wolfpack a 7-5 victory and the sweep. She also had a solo shot and a two-run homer in the opening game, an 8-0, five-inning victory over the Camels.
Dent entered the day with four home runs on the season, two of which were grand slams.
She hit a solo shot and a two-run shot in the first game, after State had already built a 5-0 lead. In the second game, she erased Campbell's 1-0 lead in the top of the third with a long drive over the right centerfield wall for the Wolfpack (21-17-1).
She came to bat with runners on first and second in the fifth inning and hit another deep shot over the leftfield wall.
"It was awesome," Dent said afterwards. "I just went up to the plate every time thinking about driving through the ball and getting hits. I just wanted to hit line drives.
"They just happened to go out of the park."
Dent became the second Wolfpack player this season to hit two home runs in back-to-back games on the same day. Junior Scout Albertson hit two against Kansas and two against North Carolina A&T on March 2 at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium during the Wolfpack Challenge.
"Today was Caitlin's day," said first-year head coach Shawn Rychcik. "What a great day for her and for us. We've struggled at times getting the big hit this season, but we had all kinds of big hits today.
"We played really well today, jumping on them early in the first game and getting the hits we needed in the second."Freshman Hanna Sommer also homered in the second game, a solo shot in the fourth. It was her fifth of the season.
Campbell's Brittany Bruce kept her team in the game with two home runs against Wolfpack sophomore righthander Emily Weiman, a solo shot and a two-run shot.
Weiman (19-15) held on for the victory, giving up five runs on nine hits. She had nine strikeouts in the game.
In the Wolfpack's third inning, junior catcher Kirsty Grant started the two-out rally with a double off the right centerfield fence. Sophomore shortstop Renada Davis walked to put runners on first and second for Dent, whose two homers in the game were half of the Pack's four hits.
The Pack returns to the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium this weekend to face North Carolina in its final home series of the season, with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
