FULLERTON, Calif. – NC State’s softball team held top-ranked Oklahoma to six singles and three earned runs, but was unable to put runs on the board against Sooner pitcher Michelle Gascoigne on Saturday in its second game of the Judi Garman Classic on the campus of Cal State-Fullerton.
Gascoigne struck out 15 Wolfpack batters, one off her career high, while Wolfpack sophomore Emily Weiman allowed only two singles out of the infield all day. She had four walks and four strikeouts on the day.
The Pack had opportunities to score thanks to lead-off singles in the second, third and seventh innings, but was unable to push a run across the plate. Junior Scout Albertson had two of the Pack’s three hits on the day, with junior Chelsea Tate getting the other.
“We hit the ball hard and kept it in play,” said first-year coach Shawn Rychcik. “We didn’t get a hit when we needed it, but I liked the way we battled throughout the game. We weren’t intimidated by their ranking at all.
“That’s the kind of game that will make us better the rest of the way.”
Oklahoma scored a single run in the third inning, after Weiman walked Destinee Martinez, who later stole second base. She gave up a soft single up the middle to Brianna Turang, who also stole second base. Weiman intentionally walked Lauren Chamberlain to load the bases with one out.
The Sooners (24-1) pushed across a run with a fielder’s choice grounder to second base, but ended the inning with a fly ball to right field.
In the fourth, the Sooners added two more on a walk, a pair of soft singles and an error.
Gascoigne (10-1) was sharp throughout the game, striking out at least two batters in six innings and striking out the side twice.
“She’s their number 2 pitcher for them, but she would be a number 1 on most of the teams we face,” Rychcik said. “She pitched well against us, but I thought we swung the bats pretty well against her.”
The Pack is slated to play a second game on Friday against Pacific, followed by games Saturday against No. 15 Michigan and No. 10 Texas.
