RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s basketball team returns to action Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum, hosting the Winston-Salem State Rams at 2 p.m. Sunday’s exhibition will be free to the general public.
NOTE REGARDING TRAFFIC:
In conjunction with the City of Oaks Marathon on Sunday, we are encouraging fans to use the 440 Beltline, exit at Western Boulevard, and then turn left at Dan Allen Drive to enter campus. After 2 p.m., all of Hillsborough Street will be open for normal traffic patterns.
RICH TRADITION
The 2013-14 season will be the 40th in the history of the NC State women’s basketball program. It will be the program’s 37th season competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
WES IS M(O)ORE
Head coach Wes Moore owns a 558-169 (.768) career coaching record. He is among the top 10 winningest active NCAA Division I women’s basketball head coaches. Moore won 12 Southern Conference regular-season titles in 15 years at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga from 1999 to 2013.
GOT THEIR NUMBER
During his time as a head coach at UTC, Wes Moore competed against 17 schools five or more times. He achieved a winning record against 15 of them.
SWEET SIX(TEEN)
NC State has six seniors on its roster in 2013-14, the most since the 2006-07 club which made the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.
BURKE IS BACK
Kody Burke returns as a two-time Academic All-America selection. She has scored 1,103 points in her career and begins her senior season with 164 blocks - 40 more will give her the NC State career record, passing Genia Beasley’s 203 from 1977-80.
Burke will enter the program’s top 10 career rebounding list upon collecting 113 rebounds this season. She could potentially crack the top eight if she collects a career-high 272.
GOOD-SHOOTING GATLING
Senior forward Markeisha Gatling averaged a team-leading 13.8 points and 8.5 rebounds over the final six games of the 2012-13 season. She will be a key figure in the post again for the Wolfpack in 2013-14. Gatling shot .577 from the floor last season, the second-best mark in the ACC.
STRONG COMPETITION
Four Atlantic Coast Conference teams were ranked in the top 11 of the preseason 2013-14 USA Today Top 25 poll released on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Duke (No. 2), Maryland (No. 6), Notre Dame (No. 7), and North Carolina (No. 11) were all ranked in the top 11 while Georgia Tech, Florida State, and Syracuse all received votes in the rankings.
LSU, who NC State will host on Dec. 20 of the 2013-14 season, was picked 17th in the rankings.
STATE PICKED TENTH
NC State was selected to finish 10th of 15 teams in the ACC this season, according to the league’s preseason poll released on Oct. 23. The Wolfpack was selected ahead of Boston College, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Pittsburgh. Duke was selected as the preseason favorite with 39 first-place votes while ACC newcomer Notre Dame was picked second with 14 first-place votes.
WELCOME HOME
Including its exhibition contest against Winston-Salem State on Nov. 3, the Wolfpack will play seven straight games at Reynolds Coliseum to open the 2013-14 season. NC State won’t play a true road game until its Dec. 5 contest at Northwestern.
