Weigel, Newman Collect Wins at WFU Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore Thomas Weigel and freshman Ryan Newman of the NC State men’s tennis team each captured a singles victory Saturday on the second day of the Wake Forest Invitational.
In the A2 draw, Weigel picked up a three-set victory over Daniel McCall of Duke, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. He is slated to face Penn State’s Alex Fennell on Sunday.
A native of Winston-Salem, Newman collected his second victory of the tournament with a thrilling three-set victory over Iowa’s Joey White, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the C1 draw. Newman will play Alex Liamas of Liberty on Sunday.
In the A doubles draw, the tandem of Weigel and Dempster is slated to play John Ho and Sam Bloom of Wake Forest in Sunday’s consolation final after earning two victories on the day. The Pack duo edged Michael Reilley and Russell Bader of Penn State in the consolation quarterfinals, 8-7 (5), before picking up a second victory against Hans Adrien Riseng and Nathan Debut of Stetson, 8-5.
The final round of singles and doubles competition will be played on Sunday.
