Men's Tennis Opens Play at Wake Forest Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Ryan Newman of the NC State men’s tennis team picked up his first collegiate victory on Friday in the first day of action at the Wake Forest Invitational.
Newman, returning to his hometown of Winston-Salem to make his debut, upset second-seeded Peter Pello of Norfolk State in his round of 16 match in the C1 draw, 6-3, 6-3. In his quarterfinal match, the first-year player fell to Furman’s Juan Sheppard, 6-3, 6-4.
In the A2 singles draw, sophomore Thomas Weigel captured a straight set victory over Stetson’s Simon Julian, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to second-seeded Nelson Vick of UNC, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
In the B2 draw, freshman Ian Dempster was edged by Duke’s Cale Hammond in a decisive third set, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, in his collegiate debut. Ranked as the top freshman out of the state of Texas coming out of high school, Dempster dropped his consolation match against Penn State’s Michael Reilley, 7-5, 6-3.
In the A doubles draw, the duo of Weigel and Dempster fell to UNC Wilmington’s second-seeded tandem of Rafael Aita and Santtu Leskinnen, 8-7 (4).
Play will resume in the tournament Saturday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles scheduled, beginning at 9 a.m.
