Men's Tennis Collects Six Wins on Day Two

FORT MYERS, Fla. - NC State men's tennis team completed a successful day of play at the Illini Invitational on Saturday, by collecting four wins in singles play and two in doubles play.
Senior Dave Thomson and junior Sean Weber squared off against Ross Guignon and Tim Ropinkski of Illinois in the opening match of the day, topping the duo 8-3. Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius fell to Bruno Abdelnour and Jared Hiltzik, 8-7, while Trey Carter and Rafael Paez stumbled against Julian Childers and Farris Gosea, 8-4. Sophomore Austin Powell and freshman Thomas Weigel capped doubles play for the Pack with an 8-3 win over Alex Jesse and Brian Page.
The Pack collected four wins in eight matches played in singles play.
Carter, Norenius, Powell and Weigel highlighted the Wolfpack's performance in singles play as all of the players collected wins. Carter defeated Colin Edwards, 6-0, 6-1, and Norenius downed Garrett Gordon 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Powell shined in his match against Vikram Hundal winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. Weigel cruised in the first set of his match versus Nathan Rakitt taking it 6-1, before winning the second set 7-6 to seal the win.
Mudge took the first set in his match against Juan Spir, but dropped the last two falling by a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Thomson and came up short against Juan Melian 6-2, 6-4,while Weber dropped a hard-fought match to Eduardo Segura 7-6 (14-12), 6-4. Paez concluded play for the Pack with a 7-6, 6-3 setback against Anish Sharma.
Action will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sundy with doubles play, followed by singles play at 10:30 a.m. at the Barbara Manzo Tennis Center.
