RALEIGH, N.C. - Four members of the NC State men's tennis team made their season debuts at the Duke Fab Four Invitational on Friday at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
Dave Thomson and Sean Weber started the day off for the Wolfpack by defeating Jarryd Botha and Becker O’Shaugnessy of Alabama (8-5), in doubles play. The duo claimed its second win of the day against Joe Mills and Stijn Meulemans from Radford 8-4 in the semifinals, to earn a spot in the finals on Saturday, September 15 at 9 a.m.
In singles play, Thomson defeated Jordan Kaufman (Elon) 7-6 (3), 6-0, while Weber knocked off Panav Jha (Kentucky) 6-4, 6-4. Ivan Sanchez Gomez also earned a win for the Pack downing Mills (Radford) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Austin Powell received a tough draw in the tournament and faced off against Anthony Rossi (Kentucky), who is the 12th ranked player in the country. Powell took the first set from Rossi 6-3, before dropping the second and third sets 6-4, and 6-1, respectively.
"We had a good start to the tournament, winning three out of four singles matches and winning the doubles match," said head coach Jon Choboy. "It's unfortunate that two nationally ranked guys had to play each other on the first day," Choboy said of Powell's match against Rossi.
Play will resume on Saturday in singles competition at 11:30 a.m. Powell will face Carlos Taborga (Alabama), Thomson will play the top-ranked player in Henrique Cunha of Duke, Sanchez Gomez will take on Raphael Hemmeier (Duke), and Weber will face Albert Wagner of Louisville.
