GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the third consecutive year, NC State’s Jaime Pulgar has earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in men’s tennis, the league office announced Thursday.
The senior lefthander from Madrid, Spain, has posted a 20-5 record this season, all while playing at No. 1 singles. He’s also posted a 16-7 record in doubles play with multiple partners.
Pulgar also won All-ACC recognition as a sophomore and junior for the Wolfpack. He owns a 75-40 singles record in his career, which is tied for fifth most singles victories in school history. He also owns a 60-38 doubles record, which ranks as the fourth most doubles victories in school history.
After spending last summer playing on the ITF Futures Tour overseas, Pulgar returned in January and had one of the best individual seasons in school history. Only three other players – Jay Weinacker, Mark Dillon and John Sadri – have ever posted more singles wins in a season.
He also posted a 7-4 record against the other players he faced on the 18-member All-ACC team.
“Jaime has been terrific for us all season long,” said NC State coach Jon Choboy. “Obviously, he’s played well for us, but he’s also been a great example to our younger players.
“Jaime is a great student and he works hard every day to get better as a tennis player.”
The Wolfpack (20-9) finished sixth in the ACC regular-season race and advanced to the quarterfinals of last week's ACC Championship with a 4-0 victory over Boston College.
ACC-champion Virginia swept all three postseason honors and had more individual selections than any other team in the league.
Virginia junior Jarmere Jenkins was selected as the ACC Player of the Year, while the Cavaliers’ Mitchell Frank earned Freshman of the Year honors and Brian Boland was named ACC Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season and the sixth time overall.
Virginia is the second men’s tennis team in ACC history – and the first since Miami in 2006 – to boast the conference’s Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year in the same season. Postseason honors, along with the 18-member 2012 All-ACC team, were selected by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches.
