RALEIGH, N.C. - Pack softball out hit the Yellow Jackets, but dropped the final game in its three games ACC series with Georgia Tech today at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium by a score of 5-2. The contest served as State's annual Kay Yow Breast Cancer game, and the program raised $1,142 for breast cancer research thanks to generous fan support.
Emily Weiman pitched the complete game for State, surrendering five earned runs off of five hits while striking out four Yellow Jacket hitters in the contest.
Scout Albertson continued her hot hitting at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a single, a double and walk in the game. Freshman Renada Davis went 2-for-4 in the game.
Kelsi Weseman put Georgia Tech (23-16, 6-3 ACC) on the board in the first inning by belting a solo home run, her eighth of the season.
Davis led off the second inning by belting a double and moved to third on a Katie Mansilla sacrifice bunt. Albertson then drew a walk to put runners on first and third for Kirsty Grant, who put together an impressive 12-pitch at-bat before striking out. The next batter, Landon Warren, also took Georgia Tech starter Hope Rush deep in the count, but she lined out to end the frame, and the Pack were unable to push a run across in the frame.
The Jackets added to their lead in the third off of another longball, a three run shot this time, by catcher Alysha Rudnik.
Davis posted her second base hit of the day in the fourth, but was gunned down attempting to score on a single by Albertson. After four complete innings, State trailed the Yellow Jackets 3-0.
Warren and Toni Ann Williford notched back-to-back base hits to open the fifth inning. Then, State took advantage of a Georgia Tech error to score Warren on a fielder's choice by Sara Lippard. Leah Jones then stepped to the plate with runners on first and third and two outs, and belted a base hit to plate Williford and pull the Pack within one at 3-2.
Georgia Tech countered in the sixth, blasting its third home run of the day, a two-run shot by Karly Fullem, to take a 5-2 lead over the Pack.
Albertson blasted a double with one out in the sixth inning, and Grant followed by drawing a walk, putting runners and first and second for Warren. She took Rush deep in the count but fanned, leaving the runners in place for Williford, who drew a base on balls to load the bases. Freshman Lippard then stepped to the plate and grounded out to end the frame with the Pack still trailing Georgia Tech 5-2.
The Pack was unable to mount a comeback in the seventh, and fell to Georgia Tech 5-2.
NC State (15-22, 0-8 ACC) returns to action Wednesday, April 4 for a doubleheader versus East Carolina at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. First pitch in the twinbill is set for 5 p.m., and game two is set to follow at 7 p.m.
