
Softball Splits with College of Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - NC State softball split a doubleheader today in Mount Pleasant, S.C. versus the College of Charleston. The Wolfpack took the first game 2-1, but fell in game two, an 11 inning affair, by a score of 3-2.
Emily Weiman took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Pack in the circle, but took the loss in game two for the Wolfpack. In 11 innings of work, she surrendered three earned runs off of seven hits while striking out 15 Cougar hitters.
Landon Warren and Toni Ann Williford went 2-for-5 for the Wolfpack in the contest.
Through three innings of play, Weiman had struck out four Cougar batters, three of which came in the third inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Warren notched a base hit, her first of the day. She then moved into scoring position on a fly ball by Kirsty Grant, and came around to score on a single by Williford. The base knock and RBI by Williford put the Pack on top 1-0 heading into the fifth inning.
Bethaney Wells drew a walk to open the sixth inning, then moved into scoring position thanks to the hard single by Leah Jones. Later in the frame, after Scout Albertson and Jones had reached base, Landon Warren belted an RBI double, giving the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Lizzy Vaughn notched the Cougars' first hit of the ballgame, an infield shot. Charleston posted two hits in the frame, but Weiman worked out of the jam to preserve the 2-0 NC State lead.
College of Charleston freshman pitcher Hope Klicker belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie up the ball game at 2-2.
Weiman fanned two Cougar hitters in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the game remained tied at 2-2.
The Pack notched two hits in the top of the ninth, but was unable to push the run across.
Dent was placed on second base to start the top of the tenth inning, and moved over to third on a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Davis. A few batters later, Jones hit a shot into the outfield, but the Cougar outfielder made an outstanding catch to end the frame and maintain the tie.
Weiman and the Wolfpack defense worked out of a jam in the bottom of the tenth frame, and heading into the eleventh the score remained tied, 2-2.
In the bottom of the eleventh inning, the Cougars notched a game-winning RBI-single to take the ball game by a score of 3-2.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Wolfpack picked up a 2-1 victory over the College of Charleston.
Morgan Peeler picked up the win in the circle, going the distance for the Pack while surrendering one run off of four hits in the contest.
Wells was responsible for the Wolfpack's two runs in the game. She went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run, her team-leading fourth of the 2012 season.
Peeler issued a walk to College of Charleston's Kristy Giragosian to lead off the second inning. She moved into scoring position off of a sacrifice bunt, but then Caitlin Dent killed the Cougar scoring attempt by making an outstanding diving catch in right field to end the inning. After two innings of play, the game remained scoreless.
The Cougars notched the game's first hit in the third inning, eventually putting runners on second and third with two outs. Peeler, though, worked out of the jam and struck out the last batter of the frame to preserve the scoreless game.
Wells notched State's first hit and simultaneously put the Pack on the board in the fourth inning by blasting her fourth home run of the 2012 season over the outfield wall.
Williford notched a base hit to open the sixth inning, but was gunned down attempting to score on a double by Renada Davis. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Wolfpack still owned a 2-0 lead over the College of Charleston.
The College of Charleston posted one run off of two hits, all with two outs, in the bottom of the sixth, to cut the Wolfpack lead to 2-1.
Cougar starter Stephanie Saylors retired the Wolfpack in order in the seventh. Heading into the bottom half of the frame, State held a 2-1 lead.
Peeler retired the Cougar order in the bottom of the seventh, preserving the 2-1 Wolfpack victory.
State softball returns to action this weekend as the squad opens ACC play in a three-game series at Florida State. On Saturday, March 10, the Pack will play a twinbill versus the Seminoles at 1 and 3 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. State closes out the series with a single game on Sunday, March 11 at noon.
