Davis Lifts Pack over Longwood

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - NC State softball picked up another win today in the Citrus Classic, beating Longwood 4-3 in Kissimmee, Fla.
Scout Albertson and Renada Davis each had big days at the plate for the Wolfpack. Albertson knocked a three-run home run in the fourth, her third of the season. Davis posted the game-winning hit, a single in the bottom of the seventh.
Morgan Peeler started the game in the circle for NC State, and was relieved by Weiman in the fourth inning.
Sara Lippard drew a walk in the second inning and Landon Warren followed with a base hit, the Pack's second of the contest. The next two batters were unable to reach base, though, forcing State to leave runners stranded at second and third to end the frame.
Longwood took a 2-0 lead in the third off of two singles and one Wolfpack error.
In the bottom of the third, Caitlin Dent sent a fly ball deep, but it was knocked down by the wind and caught by the Longwood outfielder. After three innings of play, the score remained 2-0 in the Lancer's favor.
Emily Weiman entered the game in relief of Peeler in the fourth inning. In that frame, Longwood plated an additional run to extend their lead over the Wolfpack to 3-0.
Scout Albertson tied the game at 3-3 with one swing in the fourth inning by belting a three-run home run, her third of the 2012 season.
Weiman found her groove in the fifth inning, retiring the Lancers in order.
The Wolfpack offense continued to put runners on base in the sixth, but the squad was not able to push any runs across. Heading into the seventh inning, the game remained knotted at 3-3.
Longwood notched a base hit in the top of the seventh, but Grant threw her out in a steal attempt, ending the inning.
Toni Ann Williford and Dent posted back-to-back singles to open the bottom half of the seventh inning, putting runners on first and second for Davis, who hit a ball off the top of the wall to drive in the winning run.
State softball returns to action Wednesday, March 7 in Mount Pleasant, S.C. for a doubleheader against the College of Charleston. First pitch for the twinbill is scheduled for 4 p.m.
