Softball Drops Doubleheader to Hokies

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (14-18, 0-5 ACC) dropped a doubleheader to Virginia Tech (22-12, 3-2 ACC) today at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium, falling in 10-2 in the first game and 4-2 in the second contest.
Morgan Peeler took the loss in the circle, surrendering four runs and striking out seven Hokies in the complete game effort.
Leah Jones led the Pack offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate in the contest.
Virginia Tech scored the first run of the contest off of a solo home run in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Caitlin Dent and Renada Davis notched base hits and advanced on a Hokie error. Bethaney Wells then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Dent, and Davis was plated by a Jones single. After four innings of play, State held a 2-1 lead over Virginia Tech.
Kirsty Grant opened the fifth by blasting a double, and Landon Warren followed with a base hit of her own. Dent then drew a one-out walk to load the bases, but the Pack was unable to push another run across, and after five complete frames, the Pack led Virginia Tech 2-1.
The Hokies posted three runs off of three hits in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead over the Pack.
State was unable to push any runs across in the bottom of the seventh, and fell to the Hokies 4-2.
NC State softball dropped the first contest against Virginia Tech by a score of 10-2.
Davis paced the Pack offensively, going 1-for-2 with one RBI in the contest.
Warren led off the bottom of the first with a base hit, then advanced to third after both Toni Ann Williford and Wells were hit by a pitch, loading the bases for State. Virginia Tech pitcher Jasmin Harrell worked out of the jam, though, striking out Scout Albertson to end the frame.
The Wolfpack took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Davis smashed her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot.
NC State put two runners on in the fourth, but did not push a run across. After four complete innings, the Pack held a 2-0 lead over Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech knocked two home runs in the sixth and took a 3-2 lead over the Wolfpack.
The Hokies extended their lead in the seventh inning when Kylie McGoldrick posted a solo home run, her fourth hit of the day. Overall in the frame, Virginia Tech notched seven runs off of two hits and two Wolfpack errors. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, State trailed the Hokies 10-2.
Warren flew out to the warning track to begin the seventh inning. Williford and Dent were then retired to end the contest.
State softball returns to action Wednesday, March 29 for a doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m. against Charlotte.
