CHARLOTTE, N.C. - NC State softball (15-19) split a doubleheader with Charlotte today at W.L. Phillips Field in Charlotte, N.C. The Pack dropped the first contest 5-1, but defeated the 49ers 9-7 in game two of the twinbill.
Emily Weiman picked up the victory in the second contest, surrendering seven runs off of 11 hits while striking out 10 UNCC hitters.
Scout Albertson notched three hits on the day, including her fourth home run of the season, and plated five runs for the Wolfpack offense.
The Pack got on the board first in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the second frame. Bethaney Wells got the offense going in the inning by posting a single and advancing to second on a sharp groundout by Leah Jones. The next batter, Katie Mansilla, then ripped a triple to plate Wells and put the Pack up 1-0. With Mansilla on third, Albertson stepped to the plate and blasted her fourth home run of the 2012 season, a two-run shot, to increase the State lead to 3-0.
In the third inning, Charlotte hit its second grand slam of the day, this time off the bat of Briana Gwaltney, to take a 4-3 lead.
State loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but could not push a run across, and the score remained 4-3 in favor of the 49ers.
The Wolfpack batted around and reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning, scoring five runs off of five hits in the frame. Toni Ann Williford led off the inning with a single, then Renada Davis and Wells notched back-to-back base hits. Sara Lippard, pinch hitting for Mansilla, drew a bases-loaded walk to plate a run and put the Pack back up in the contest. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Albertson, who blasted a two-run double into the gap to give State an 8-4 lead over the 49ers.
Landon Warren posted her first hit of the day in the seventh inning, roping an RBI-double to put the Pack up 9-4.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Charlotte posted three runs off of four hits to cut the Wolfpack lead to 9-7, but Weiman was able to squash the rally and preserve the victory.
NC State softball dropped its first contest with UNCC by a score of 5-1.
Morgan Peeler got the start in the circle for the Wolfpack. In 2.1 innings of work, she surrendered five earned runs off of five hits. Weiman came on in her relief in the third frame. She did not surrender a run in 3.2 innings of work and struck out three 49er hitters.
In the second inning, Wells led off the frame with a base hit, but was retired on a fielder's choice by Jones. Two batters later, Albertson stepped to the plate and knocked a single which drove in Peeler who was running for Jones, to put the Pack up 1-0.
The 49ers countered in the bottom half of the second, tying the game up at 1-1 off of two hits and two walks.
In the third inning, Charlotte's Samantha Slade blasted a grand slam to put the 49ers up 5-1 over the Pack.
Jones reached to open the seventh, but the Pack offense was unable to push the run across, and State fell to UNCC 5-1.
The Pack offense struggled to get on track in the contest, notching only five hits.
State softball returns to the field this weekend for a three-game ACC series versus Georgia Tech. Action begins Saturday, March 31 with a doubleheader at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium at 5 and 7 p.m., then concludes Sunday at noon.
