Men's Tennis Hosts Super Sunday Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 58 NC State men’s tennis team kicks off a busy stretch of five matches in eight days on Sunday, when it hosts a doubleheader against No. 45 Cornell and unranked Charlotte at the Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Wolfpack (5-1) faces Cornell’s Big Red at 10 a.m., followed by a 4 p.m. meeting against the 49ers.
Cornell owns a 7-0 all-time record against the Wolfpack, though the teams haven’t met since prior to NC State’s records began in 1956. The two teams first faced each other in tennis in 1938.
State owns a 20-1 all-time record over Charlotte.
Cornell (2-2) is coming off a pair of losses in last weekend’s ITA Kick-Off regional in Columbus, Ohio, falling to host No. 3 Ohio State in the first round and to No. 28 Notre Dame in the consolation match. The Wolfpack lost to No. 7 Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., and beat No. 58 East Tennessee State in the consolation match.
Cornell’s two victories came at home over Buffalo and Boston College.
Charlotte (0-1) has played just one match this season, losing 6-1 at No. 39 Wake Forest on Jan. 15.
Next weekend, the Wolfpack hosts three matches at the Isenhour Tennis Center, facing South Carolina on Saturday and William & Mary and UNC Greensboro in a Sunday doubleheader. Admission is free for all home matches.
Pack bounces back from first loss
The Wolfpack suffered its first loss of the season, 0-4, to No. 7 Kentucky at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Lexington, Ky., on Saturday, Jan. 27, but bounced back the next day to defeat No. 58 East Tennessee State, 4-0, in the consolation match in the nationwide event. It was one of 15 four-team tournaments to select the qualifiers for the 2012 ITA Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
Wolfpack in the ITA Polls
NC State is ranked No. 58 nationally in the ITA team poll released on Feb. 2, falling one spot from the second poll of the season. Freshman Austin Powell, ranked No. 100 overall after posting a 9-3 record in fall tournament action, is the Wolfpack’s only player in the ITA’s ranking of the 125 top collegiate players.
Freshmen Remain Undefeated
Freshmen Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem, N.C., Austin Powell of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Beck Bond of Meriden, Conn., all remain undefeated in singles action this spring. Mudge, playing at No. 3 and 4 singles, is 4-0 so far this season. He was down one set and tied 5-5 in the second against No. 95 Tom Jomby of Kentucky when the match was discontinued. Powell is also 4-0 in his inaugural season, while Bond is 2-0.
They have also paired with upperclassmen to win all six of the doubles matches they have played, as the Wolfpack has won 25 of 30 singles matches and 13 of 17 doubles matches.
Prior to its arrival in the fall, the talented trio was rated the nation’s No. 13 incoming freshman class by TennisRecruiting.net.
Choboy Records Win No. 250
NC State’s 6-1 victory over East Carolina on Jan. 22 was head coach Jon Choboy’s 250th career victory and his 120th win at NC State. The veteran coach is in his 10th season with the Wolfpack and his 17th season overall
New Outdoor Home to Open in March
The $3 million Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium was completed in the fall and will become the new home of NC State men’s and women’s varsity tennis when the weather warms up. The new stadium, built on the site of the previous facility, includes six lighted courts, an electronic scoreboard and chairback seating for up to 1,000 fans. For now, the Wolfpack will play in the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Facility, with plans to move to the new outdoor courts by March 1.
Pulgar Wins Initial ACC Player of the Week Honors
NC State senior lefthander Jaime Pulgar shared the initial ACC Player of the Week honors with Wake Forest’s David Hopkins after both led their teams to a pair of season-opening victories.
