RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State (4-5) softball opened up the home portion of its schedule this evening with a win, beating Lehigh (0-1) 6-2 at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Morgan Peeler(1-1) picked up the win in the circle for State. In five innings of work, she surrendered zero earned runs off of three hits and struck out four Lehigh hitters.
State put together a balanced offensive attack in the contest--eight of the nine hitters in the lineup recorded one base hit.
Caitlin Dent reached on an error and moved into scoring position on the single by Sara Lippard in the first inning. The next batter, Landon Warren, then belted a single to plate Dent and put the Pack on top 1-0.
Peeler retired the Mountain Hawk lineup straight through the first time around, and did not allow a Lehigh hitter to reach base until the third inning.
Lehigh posted two runs in the top of the fourth inning off of two hits and one Wolfpack error, but Peeler struck out two in the frame to keep the game at a 2-1 Mountain Hawk advantage.
The Wolfpack regained the lead in the fifth inning. Renada Davis notched a base hit, then Katie Mansilla followed with a single of her own to move Davis into scoring position. Toni Ann Willifordblasted a single through the right side next, which plated Davis to pull the Pack even with the Mountain Hawks at 2-2. Albertson, the next batter, lifted a sacrifice fly to score Mansilla and give State a 3-2 lead.
Emily Weimanentered the game in the sixth inning in relief of Peeler. In two innings of work, she surrendered no runs off of two hits and struck out two Lehigh batters.
State increased its advantage to 6-2 in the sixth frame. Leah Jones, Bethaney Wellsand Dent each reached base to lead off the inning. All three later came around to score, pushing the score to 6-2 in the Pack's favor.
The Pack returns to action tomorrow at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium for the Wolfpack Challenge. State takes on Kent State at 2:30 p.m. and Georgetown at 4:30 p.m.
