Softball Heads to Texas A&M Aggie Classic

NC State softball (3-1) takes the field for the second weekend of the season this Friday, Feb. 17 in College Station, Texas. There, the Wolfpack will be competing in the Texas A&M Tournament Friday through Sunday.
State will first take on UTSA on Friday at 1:15 p.m. eastern time, then hit the field again for a 4 p.m. contest versus host No. 15 Texas A&M at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the Pack will take on Tulsa at 11 a.m. and No. 15 Texas A&M again at 6:15 p.m. Finally, on Sunday, State rounds out competition in Texas by playing UTSA at 11 a.m.
Last weekend, the Pack opened up the 2012 season with a strong showing, going 3-1 at the Red and Black Showcase in Athens, Ga. State fell to Utah State in the opening game, but bounced back to defeat St. John's and Campbell, and eventually knock off host No. 10 Georgia.
Senior outfielder Landon Warren led NC State offensively a weekend ago, going 6-14 (.429) in Athens. She also notched four extra-base hits, including three doubles and one home run. Sophomore Scout Albertsoncame up with big hits for the Pack in the Red and Black Showcase, including her first career home run and a game-winning two-RBI double in the sixth inning versus Georgia.
Emily Weimanearned a 3-1 record in the circle in her first collegiate weekend. She threw 19.2 innings, surrendering only five earned runs, and struck out 25 batters. Overall, Weiman boasts a 1.78 ERA and threw three complete games a week ago.
UTSA opened its 2012 season in the Texas Classic last weekend in Austin, Texas. There, the Roadrunners went 1-4, falling to Colorado State, Texas and Cal State Fullerton before defeating Cal State Fullerton in the consolation game of the tournament. Caitlyn Ivy and Haylee Staton each recorded five hits for UTSA in the tournament, and junior pitcher Alyssa Vordenbaum notched the top ERA on the squad (3.89).
Texas A&M (3-2) had an up-and-down first weekend of play in Tempe, Ariz. at the Kajikawa Classic. The Aggies opened up the season by upsetting No. 9 Stanford and No. 8 Arizona, but fell to BYU and Northwestern. The squad owns a 27-game home winning streak at the Aggie Softball Complex, and is coming off of its tenth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Aggies are lead by 2011 All-America selections Meagan May and Mel Dumezich and two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Natalie Villarreal.
Tulsa (2-1) competed in the Louisiana Classic last weekend, defeating Mississippi Valley State and Rutgers but falling to No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette. The Golden Hurricane is led at the plate by junior Samantha Cobb, who went 10-for-12 with three home runs and seven RBI a week ago en route to being named Conference USA hitter of the week.
