BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A tetrad of NC State track runners made their season debuts Friday evening, though none fared better than redshirt senior Ryan Hill, who eased his way to a victory in the men’s 5,000m invitational run at the Hoosier Open in Gladstein Fieldhouse on the campus of Indiana University.
Hill showed exactly why he’s garnered five All-America selections in just three years as a Wolfpack runner, winning the 5K race in 13:43.52 – just four seconds behind the all-time track record which was set at last year’s meet.
Redshirt junior Andrew Colley, who also competed in the event, finished sixth with a time of 14:02.13. Zachary Mayhew (Indiana), Ryan Dohner (Texas), Joseph Stilin (Texas) and Lane Werley (UCLA) took the two-through-five spots in the order of finishers.
On the women’s side, sophomore and 2012 All-ACC selection Joanna Thompson raced to a third place finish in the women’s 5,000m invitational run, with a time of 16:54.42. Redshirt senior Andie Cozzarelli crossed the finish line with a time of 17:14.80, which was good enough for fifth place.
A pair of Indiana runners took the top two spots, as Kelly Duerksen won the event in 16:37.27, and was closely by Samantha Ginther.
The Pack will return to action after the winter break, when it resumes the indoor season Jan. 18-19 at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
