WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday. The day was full of walkovers, as many players were held out of playing, including Trey Carter, Simon Norenius, and Dave Thomson who did not play singles matches as a result.
"We have a few things to work on and that's what tournaments are for, to figure out where you are and what you need to work on in practice," said head coach Jon Choboy.
Freshman Thomas Weigel defeated Shea Thomas of Liberty in his only match of the day. Weigel dropped the opening set, 7-6 (5), but won the last two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to claim the victory.
In the A2 singles bracket, Rafael Paez fell to UNC Wilmington's Chris Cooprider, 7-6 (3), 6-0, in the consolation finals.
In doubles play, Thomson and Norenius outlasted North Carolina's Nelson Vick and Connor Daly, 8-6. Carter and Weigel fell to William Albright and Jimmy Roueche of UNC Greensboro, 8-5, in the other bracket of doubles play.
"We got to learn a lot more about the freshman after seeing them play, so it was good to get a chance to see them play so now we go back to work before the regionals start on Wednesday," Choboy said.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Regional Championships held at the Cary (N.C) Tennis Park.
