RALEIGH, N.C. -- The NC State women's tennis team received a No. 34 ranking in the first poll of the 2012 season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Last spring, the Wolfpack women enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in school history, culminating in a No. 25 ranking, the highest ever for the program. The team will look to build on that success this spring.
Sophomore Joelle Kissell was given a No. 40 ranking in the opening poll. Kissell led the Pack during the fall, accumulating a record of 9-3 in singles action. Two of her wins came against ranked opponents: she defeated No. 18 Lindsey Hardenbergh of Virginia, 6-2, 6-4, and topped No. 55 Alexa Guarachi of Alabama, 6-3 6-2. Of the three losses that she suffered, two were to ranked opponents.
The ACC will be a powerhouse conference in women's tennis this season, with nine schools ranked in the top 40 in the nation: Duke (No. 3), North Carolina (No. 4), Virginia (No. 9), Miami (No. 11), Georgia Tech (No. 13), Clemson (No. 14), Florida State (No. 17), NC State (No. 34) and Maryland (No. 40).
NC State will open the spring season on Saturday, Jan. 21, with home matches against Davidson and Winthrop. Action will begin at 9 a.m.
