KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The No. 33 NC State women's tennis team blanked No. 58 UC Davis on the final day of the ITA Kickoff, winning the match 4-0. The Wolfpack was led by sophomore Joelle Kissell, and junior Tatiana Illova, who each picked up wins in both singles and doubles action.
"I think the team did a great job today," said head coach Hans Olsen. "They had great focus on the court today. We wanted to be more aggressive, and I think they did that. We had a lot of people step up today, and I think overall, the team played great tennis."
Kissell, ranked 40th in the nation, defeated Dahra Zamudio, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 1 position. Kissell and partner Ashley Miller teamed up to defeat the duo of Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chiu in doubles action, 8-4.
Illova, playing No. 2 singles, defeated Megan Heneghan, 6-3, 6-1. Illova and Elisha Hande topped Zamudio and Nicole Koehly in the No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-3.
Nicole Martinez, playing in her first singles match for the Wolfpack, beat Ellie Eldes, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 6 singles.
Sophie Nelson and Christy Sipes teamed up to defeat Lauren Curry and Eldes, 8-3. Hande, Sipes, and Chloe Smith all competed in singles matches, but the contests were left unfinished after Kissell earned the fourth point for the Wolfpack to clinch the victory.
NC State will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4, against VCU in Richmond, Va.
