RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 59 NC State men’s tennis team will host a pair of dual matches for the second consecutive weekend at the Isenhour Tennis Center, when it faces Penn State on Sunday at 10 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match against East Carolina.
The Wolfpack (2-0) rolled over both Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville by 7-0 scores, with senior Jaime Pulgar and freshmen Austin Powell and Robbie Mudge all winning their two matches. Six others players in the Pack’s deep lineup all won singles matches.
Powell, Mudge and fellow freshman Beck Bond, who were collectively ranked as the No. 13 recruiting class in the nation by www.TennisRecruiting.net, were responsible for five of the Pack’s 12 season-opening wins in singles and two of the six wins in doubles action.
Pulgar, a two-time All-ACC selection who was part of four wins in singles and doubles actions last weekend, shared ACC Player of the Week honors with Wake Forest’s David Hopkins for his performance in the season-opening matches.
This will be the first match of the season for both the Nittany Lions and the Pirates. State owns a 9-0 all-time record against Penn State and a 36-6 all-time record against East Carolina.
Last year, Penn State was 10-18 overall and 0-10 in the Big Ten. East Carolina was 13-11 overall and 1-3 in Conference USA.
Both matches will be played at the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Courts. Admission is free for all spectators.
