GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State senior Jaime Pulgar and Wake Forest senior David Hopkins have been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Players of the Week for the 2012 spring season after each led their teams to a pair of season-opening victories.
After spending the last six months on the ITF Futures Tour in Kuwait, India and his native Spain, Pulgar returned to campus less than a week ago to begin preparations for the 2012 season. The two-time All-ACC selection, who battled with injuries last season, cruised in his four matches over the weekend, as NC State opened the season with 7-0 victories over Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.
Pulgar won his singles opener vs. Gardner-Webb’s Adam Knutsson-Sunbald, 6-0, 6-0, and his second match vs. UNCA’s Adrien Langeard by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Playing with two different partners, he also won his two doubles matches, teaming with sophomore Ivan Sanchez Gomez at the No. 2 spot vs. Gardner-Webb and freshman Austin Powell at the No. 3 spot.
Wake Forest’s Hopkins went a perfect 4-0 in singles anddoubles against Furman and Charlotte to help lead Wake Forest to a 2-0 start to the 2012 season.
