WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kody Burke and Bonae Holston combined for 43 points and 18 rebounds for NC State in a 75-66 victory at Wake Forest on Monday night at Joel Coliseum.
Burke, the sophomore from Riverside, Calif., had a monster night with a career-high 26 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals, while Holston, the All-ACC senior forward, added 17 points and 10 boards for her fifth double-double of the 2011-12 campaign.
Coming out of halftime with a 26-all tie, NC State (12-6, 2-3 ACC) shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field in the second half to break open a tight ball game.
A 25-5 run that spanned portions of both halves gave State a 41-31 lead at the 11:53 mark of the second half.
Three minutes later, after Wake had cut its deficit to 43-40, Burke blocked a potential game-tying three by Erin Hall at the top of the key. She gathered the loose ball and went coast-to-coast for a 45-40 lead.
The Deacs never got any closer, as the lead increased all the way to 13, 59-46, after a three-pointer from Marissa Kastanek (12 points) with 5:41 to play.
Burke was the story all night, going 9-for-16 from the field, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
A double-digit run by each team was the story of the first half.
With the game tied 14-all, Wake opened up a 26-16 advantage thanks to a 12-2 run that took up 4:21 of the first half.
Raleigh native Lakevia Boykin had the hot hand in the run with seven-consecutive points, and Secily Ray capped the 10-point lead at the 6:00 mark with a runner for one of her three first-half buckets.
The rest of the half, however, belonged to the Wolfpack. Krystal Barrett ignited the 10-0 run with a fastbreak layup.
State’s post players then took over from that point. Burke made the next field goal to get into double digits with her 10th point of the half. Holston then scored three-straight from close range and she had 12 at intermission.
To help fuel the Pack’s run, Wake went 0-for-8 from the field over the final six minutes, turned the ball over six times, and missed two free throws.
Kastanek was held scoreless in the first half, but the 22 combined points by Burke and Holston left the game up for grabs at the break.
Wake Forest (11-6, 1-3 ACC) was led by 14 points from Mykala Walker, while Chelsea Douglas and Sandra Garcia had 13 and 11 points, respectively off the bench.
NC State visits Clemson on Thursday at 7 p.m. The next home game is Sunday against North Carolina at 1 p.m.
