Freshmen Advance To Quarterfinals For Men's Tennis

NC State men’s tennis freshmen Austin Powell and Robbie Mudge, playing in just the second tournament of their careers, both advanced into Sunday’s Division II quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiate with a pair of wins Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Powell, of Muscle Shoals, Ala., defeated Auburn’s Michael Wardell (6-4, 6-3) and Georgia Southern’s Oliver Webb (6-2, 6-0) on Saturday to stay undefeated in the tournament. He will play Vanderbilt’s Jeff Offendahl Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Mudge, of Mooresville, N.C., beat Liberty’s Giancarlo Lemmi (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Tennessee Tech’s Justin Kirstein (6-2, 6-0) to remain undefeated as well. He will play Auburn’s Lucas Lopasso at 9:30 a.m.
Sophomore Sean Weber won a hard-fought match over South Carolina’s Kyle Koch, then lost in the round of 16 to Davidson’s Chris Mark 6-3, 6-4.
In Division I doubles action, junior Will Rollinson continued to advance. He was paired with Virginia Tech’s Mauricio Antun prior to the tournament and they have advanced to the Division II doubles quarterfinals. They will play Auburn’s Lopasso and Raphael Rondino Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
In Charlottesville, Va., at the UVa Ranked +1 Invitational, senior Dominic Hodgson lost a pair of matches on Saturday, to fourth-seeded Jesus Bondres of East Tennessee State (6-3, 6-2) and to Andrew Carter of Louisville (7-5, 6-3).
Hodgson and senior teammate Julian Sullivan will play Sunday at 9 a.m. in the White doubles consolation finals.
