DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Austin Powell of Muscle Shoals, Ala., defeated fourth-seeded Raphael Hemmeler of Duke in the White bracket of the Nike Fab-4 Invitational Saturday, on a day that inclement weather and a power surge at Duke’s Sheffield Tennis Center prolonged play deep into the night.
Powell fell to top-seeded Luka Somen of Duke in his third-round match, but advanced to play for third place in the 16-player bracket against North Carolina’s William Parker at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Saturday’s rounds in the men’s draw were moved from the outdoor Cary Tennis Park because of rainy weather to Duke’s indoor facility. Matches were still being played at midnight.
Doubles action was postponed until Sunday.
Freshman Robbie Mudge of Mooresville, N.C., lost two matches in the Blue bracket. He fell in his morning match to top-seeded Henrique Cunha of Duke, 6-3, 6-4, and his other match to South Carolina’s Nick Jones, 6-2, 1-6, 10-6. He will play Sunday morning for seventh place against Kentucky’s Grant Roberts.
In the White bracket, sophomore Ivan Sanchez Gomez lost to top-seeded Chris Mengel of Duke, 6-0, 6-2, and to Alabama’s Ricky Doverspike, 6-4, 6-4. He won seventh place in the bracket when Duke’s Torsten Wietoska withdrew from Sunday’s final match.
Sophomore Matt Thomson lost his first match on Saturday to Radford’s Thomas Dehaen, 6-2, 6-2, and his second match carried over to Sunday morning. Sophomore Sean Weber will play Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against an undetermined opponent.
The event will conclude with finals matches in both singles and doubles. Location will be determined Sunday morning based on weather conditions.
