Adams, Shuman Set Personal Bests

GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State high jumpers Danielle Adams, a sophomore from Jacksonville, N.C., and Lacey Shuman, a freshman from Timonium, Md., both set person bests on Sunday at North Carolina A&T’s Aggie Classic, in their final attempts to earn qualifying marks for the NCAA East preliminary round that begins in two weeks.
Adams, who set a season-best mark on Saturday at Clemson, improved that jump by 2 ½ inches on Sunday at NC A&T’s Irwin Belk Track, with a leap of 5-feet, 9 ¾-inches to win the event. Shuman, who also had a season-best on Saturday at Clemson, exceeded her mark by nearly three inches, hitting 5-feet, 8-inches to finish second behind Adams.
Throwers Brittany Hampton, a junior from Monroe, N.C., and Jule Rich, a freshman from Cumberland, Va., competing as an unattached athlete, won the women’s and men’s discus events.
Hampton won her event with a toss of 167-feet, 9-inches, while freshman teammate Tremanisha Taylor of Henderson, N.C., was second, competing as an unattached athlete.
Rich, also competing unattached, won the men’s event with a distance of 164-feet, 4-inches, while sophomore Grant Pearce of Willow Springs, N.C., was third at 150-feet, 11-inches.
Junior Emmanuel Davis of Cameron, N.C., was third in the long jump with a distance of 24-feet, 1 ½-inches.
Sprinters A’Tolani Akinkuotu of Greenville, N.C., and Tobias Palmer of Pittsboro, N.C., competed in the 100-meter dash. Akinkuotu advanced to the finals with a time of 10.75 seconds in the preliminaries. Palmer was 33rd at 11.01 seconds.
Akinkuotu finished 19th overall, with a time of 10.68 seconds in the finals.
The event concluded a busy weekend for select members of the Wolfpack men’s and women’s track teams and was the final event of the regular season. Those individuals who finished in the top 48 in the East region will advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Round May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind.
