Davis, Mercer Win Events at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C.-- Junior Emmanuel Davis won the long jump, leading three NC State participants in the top 10 in the event at the final day of competition in the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The native of Cameron, N.C., hit a mark of 23-feet, 1 3/4-inches to win, followed by teammate Lamont Savage in second at 22-feet, 11-inches. Junior Kwame Boatwright was ninth with a leap of 21-feet, 10-inches.
For the Wolfpack women, freshman Erin Mercer handily won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:23.21, while senior Kara McKenna was sixth with a time of 10:49.65.
Sophomore Brian Himelright was second in the men's 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 8:59.11.
In other events, sophomore Ben Major was seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.05 seconds.
The 4X100 relay team consisting of senior A'Tolani Akinuotu, Major, Miles Walker and Daniel Fretz was third with a time of 42.13 seconds.
Walker was eighth in the 400-meter race with a time of 48.73 seconds, while Fretz was 14th at 49.11 seconds.
Akinkuotu advanced to the finals in the 100-meter dash, where he finished seventh at 10.93 seconds.
Junior Brittany Hampton was the top collegiate thrower in the women's discus with a season-best toss of 163-feet, 10-inches. Winning the event was former NCAA runner-up Rachel Longfors, an assistant at North Dakota State who threw 180-feet even as an unattached competitor. NC State freshman Tremanisha Taylor, also competing unattached, was fifth in the event with a throw of 149-feet, 9-inches.
Junior Lawanda Henry was second in the weight throw at 175-feet, 2-inches. Hampton was seventh a t 159-feet, 4-inches.
Sophomore Paige Eley advanced to the finals of the women's 100-meter dash, where she finished fifth with a time of 12.41 seconds.
In the women's long jump, sophomore Karimah Shepherd was second with a leap of 18-feet, 5 1/4-inches.
Freshman Lacey Shuman was fourth in the high jump at 5-feet, 5-inches, while teammate Danielle Adams was 12th at 5-feet, 3-inches.
In the women's 800-meter race, the Wolfpack had three finishers in the top 13, with junior Tiayonna Blackmon leading the way in seventh place at 2:09.69, followed by freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele in ninth at 2:10.46 and freshman Lillian Greibesland in 13th at 2:12.03.
