DURHAM, N.C. – Versatile NC State junior runner Ryan Hill won the 10,000-meter race for the second year in a row on the first day of the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium, followed closely by teammate Adam Henken.
The one-two combination, plus an impressive fourth-place finish by redshirt freshman Nathaniel Williams in the discus, propelled the Wolfpack men into second place after the first day of action with a total of 23 points, behind host Duke’s 34. The meet continues Friday and Saturday at Wallace Wade.
Hill, the Hickory, N.C. native who has won multiple All-America honors in both track and cross country, posted a time of 29:39.56 for the win, earning 10 points for his team and giving NC State its ACC-best ninth win in that event in conference history. Hill won two events at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships, taking the 3,000-meter race as an individual and anchoring NC State’s winning distance medley relay team. He also advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000 meters, where he earned second-team All-America honors.
Henken, a senior from Catharpin, Va., in his first year with the Wolfpack after transferring from Kentucky, posted a time of 29:41.63 to earn All-ACC honors. Sophomore Patrick Campbell also competed in the event, finishing 13th with a time of 30:43.08.
Williams, in his first year competing for the Wolfpack from Newport, N.C., has been steadily improving throughout the spring and hit a career-best mark of 170-feet, 3-inches to take fifth place in the discus.
For the Wolfpack women, Andie Cozzarelli of Apex, N.C., posted one of the fastest times in school history to finish second in the 10,000-meter race and earn All-ACC honors. Her time of 34:13.32 ranks 10th all-time in NC State history in the event. Freshman Halsey Merritt was 13th in the event, followed by senior Brittany Tinsley at 14th.
Junior Brittany Hampton of Monroe, N.C., was fourth in the discus with a toss of 156-feet, 7-inches.
After the first day of competition, the Wolfpack women are fourth overall with 13 total points.
Championship action continues Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. Field events including the shot put, long jump and high jump are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Preliminaries in the 1500-meter run, 100-meter hurdles, 110-meter high hurdles, 400-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 800-meter run, 400-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash start at 4 p.m. The day concludes with the women’s and men’s 3000-meter steeplechase finals at 7:45 and 8:10 p.m.
