RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (26-21, 7-11 ACC) swept an ACC doubleheader from Virginia (21-29, 4-14 ACC) on senior day today at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Pack shut out the Cavaliers in the first game by a score of 1-0, and earned a 3-2 victory in the second half of the twinbill.
Caitlin Dent posted a 2-for-2 performance in the second game, notching the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning. In addition, Landon Warren earned a 2-for-3 day at the plate for the Pack.
Morgan Peeler picked up the victory in the circle, surrendering two runs on six hits in the complete game effort.
The Wolfpack got on the board in the bottom of the third inning after notching three-straight base hits to lead off the frame. Toni Ann Williford, Warren and Bridget Desbois each notched singles, loading the bases for Dent, who lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Williford and give the Pack a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Alyssa Allbritten then singled to score Warren and increase the NC State advantage to 2-0 before Desbois was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
Virginia evened the score at 2-0 in the fourth inning when Erica Cipolloni blasted her third home run of the 2011 season, a two-run shot.
Dent led off the sixth inning with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Allbritten. Alicia Abbott then notched a single, to move the runners up a base. Alyssa Ishibashi, the next batter, lined out to first base for the second out of the inning. However, the Virginia first baseman proceeded to make an errant throw, which allowed Dent to score, giving the Pack a 3-2 lead.
NC State took game one in the series with Virginia by a score of 1-0.
Kayla Cox posted an outstanding performance in the circle for the Wolfpack, surrendering no runs and only two hits in seven innings of work, striking out 11 Virginia batters in the process. The shutout is Cox's fourth of the 2011 campaign and second in a week.
Desbois led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a well-hit double, then moved to third on a groundout by Dent. Allbritten stepped the plate next and knocked a perfectly placed single, easily scoring Samantha Melton, a pinch runner for Desbois, to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
In the second and fifth innings, the Pack began the frame with a base hit, but in both innings, was unable to push a run across.
Between games one and and two of the doubleheader, the NC State softball program recognized the 2011 senior class, Abbott, Allbritten, Desbois and Ishibashi.
NC State softball returns to action tomorrow for the conclusion of the series with Virginia. The first pitch is slated for noon at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Collection bins will be set up to benefit the local victims from the April 16, 2011 tornado outbreak in the Raleigh area.
