PHILADELPHIA – NC State junior Brittany Hampton, the school record holder in the discus, won that event in the college section of the 117th-annual Penn Relays, the nation’s oldest and largest track meet.
On a day when inclement weather hampered and delayed some events at Penn's Franklin Field, Hampton’s toss of 162-feet, 7-inches was the top distance among the 24 competitors in the event. The mark did not quite top her best mark of the season, which is more than 170 feet earlier this spring at the Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., but it earned her a first-place finish in the prestigious event.
Hampton, who qualified for the NCAA Regionals last year in the discus, was one of several Wolfpack women to compete in Thursday’s opening day for individual events. Teammate Lacey Shuman tied for ninth in the college high jump at 5-feet, 4 ½-inches and Karimah Shepherd was 20th in the college long jump at 18-feet, 2 ¼-inches.
NC State will continue competition in the three-day meet on Friday, as several Wolfpack men will compete in the high jump, the long jump and the discus. The Wolfpack will also enter a team in the 4 X100-meter race.
NC State won both the 4X100 and the 4X200 at the Penn Relays in 1982 and ’83.
