CHARLOTTE - Juniors Lawanda Henry and Brittany Hampton led a wave of NC State participants with victories in the hammer throw and discus, respectively, Friday at UNC Charlotte's 49er Classic in the first outdoor event of the season for the Wolfpack men's and women's track and field teams.
Henry won the hammer throw at 178-feet, 1-inch, her best mark since setting the school record as a freshman in 2009. She was followed by Hampton's second-place finish at 174-feet, 7-inches. Junior Jessica Sanders was seventh at 146-feet, 8-inches.
Hampton later won the discus competition with a mark of 160-feet, 3-inches. The Wolfpack women also dominated the 1,500 meters at the Irwin Belk Track, taking five of the top 10 spots in the race. Junior Tiayonna Blackmon finished second with a personal-best time of 4:33.73. That time was matched by freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele for third place and freshman Ryanna Henderson was fourth with a time of 4:34.49.
Sophomore Erika Alpeter was seventh at 4:35.71 and sophomore Samantha Norman, running unattached, was eighth at 4:36.99.
In the 100-meter hurdles, both junior Taylor Graham and freshman Kerrie Davis both advanced to Saturday's finals.
For the men, sophomore Ben Major hit a personal-best time of 21 seconds flat in the 200 meters. He also qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100 meters after finishing with a time of 10.62 seconds, to finish third in the preliminaries.
Senior A'Tolani Akinkuotu also advanced to the finals in the 100 with a time of 10.67 seconds, which was fourth in the preliminaries.
Sophomore Daniel Fretz advanced to the finals in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.36, the fourth-best time in the preliminaries.
In the men's 1,500 meters, freshman Michael Mansy, running unattached, was eighth with a time of 3:55.86.
