WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Amber White had an amazing final regular-season game of her collegiate career, but even her career-high 33 points wasn't enough for NC State in a 100-94 overtime loss to Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
NC State enters the ACC Tournament next week as the No. 10 seed with a 13-16 overall record, 4-10 in conference. The Pack will tangle with seventh-seed Boston College Thursday night at 6 p.m., at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
The two clubs just met this past Thursday with the Wolfpack coming out on top 80-69 in Raleigh. BC held court in January up in Chestnut Hill. To stoke the fire a little more, NC State knocked out the Eagles in the semifinals of the 2010 ACC Tournament. Next Thursday will the sixth meeting between the two teams over the last two seasons.
Wake Forest improved to 14-16, 5-9 with its win today.
White's career effort Sunday included tying a school record with 17 made free throws and 18 attempts. Freshman Kody Burke scored a season-best 19 points, senior Brittany Strachan had 14 and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Marissa Kastanek added 12.
Sandra Garcia led Wake with 23 points. Brittany Waters had 20 points, Chelsea Douglas had 18, Brooke Thomas had 15 and Lakevia Boykin had 13.
NC State appeared ready to roll to its fourth-straight win after White made her 15th straight free throw for a 78-75 lead with 5.0 seconds left.
Wake raced down the court and Douglas launched a contested three-pointer from the corner that banked off the backboard, swished through the nets and meant the Pack was playing its second extra-session contest of the year.
The Deacs kept the momentum going, scoring 14 of the first 16 points of overtime to lead 92-80 with 1:26 left. Douglas made back-to-back three's early in the run.
The Wolfpack got to within four with 10 seconds left.
Trailing 42-34 at intermission, the Pack cut it to 42-40 early in the second, but Wake scored 11 of the next 13 points to regain momentum and a 53-42 after a Thomas bucket.
NC State came right back with a 13-2 run of its own to tie the game 55-all after two free throws from White with 12:22 left in regulation.
The Pack would gradually cultivate a five-point advantage, 72-67, after a layup from Burke with 4:35 left.
Foul trouble hindered the Wolfpack for nearly the entire first half. Bonae Holston picked up her second foul at the 16:31 mark, and White did the same at 9:27.
With an already depleted roster, those two stalwarts made it difficult for the visiting Pack.
However, with all that being said, a slash to the goal by White gave NC State its first lead, 11-10, at the 13:38 mark.
Devin Griffin made her first appearance in three weeks and made an immediate impact with her first three-pointer of the season - giving the Pack a 22-20 advantage with 8:36 left in the first half.
Wake responds with a 15-2 run over the next three minutes, 34 seconds to take a 35-24 lead.
A three-pointer from Douglas gave the Deacons its largest advantage of 14, 38-26.
NC State caught fire at the tail end of the first half, cutting the deficit to five after a fastbreak layup from Kastanek, but a three-pointer from Lakevia Boykin sent Wake up 42-24 at intermission.
Waters and Garcia combined for 23 first-half points, while Strachan led the Wolfpack with eight points.
Thursday's game with BC will be shown on the ACC Network at theacc.com.
