RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball hits the diamond at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend, Feb. 25-27. The Wolfpack will play four games throughout the tournament, taking on St. Joseph's, Florida International and Georgetown.
The Pack currently stands at 6-4 after competing in the Georgia Softball Classic in Athens, Ga. a week ago. There, the squad put together an impressive offensive effort, earning victories over North Dakota State, Marshall, Buffalo and Winthrop before falling to No. 2 Georgia on Sunday.
NC State owns a combined 1-1 record against the tournament field, having never faced Florida International. The Pack is 1-0 against St. Joseph's, but fell to Georgetown in the program's only meeting with the Hoyas in 2010.
St. Joseph's (2-3) competed in Conway, S.C. last weekend, taking part in the Coastal Carolina tournament. There, the Hawks defeated Bucknell and James Madison, but lost twice to Coastal Carolina. The squad is led offensively by Dana Parks, who has garnered 10 hits in five games and boasts a .579 on-base percentage for the 2011 season.
Florida International (5-6) took part in the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament a week ago in Miami, Fla., where the Golden Panthers took two wins from ACC foe Georgia Tech, but fell twice to Pittsburgh. Ashley McClain, FIU's offensive leader, boasts a .467 average at the plate, and has notched three doubles, a triple and a homerun in two weekends of play.
Georgetown (1-4) traveled to Ft. Myers, Fla., a week ago to play in the Florida Gulf Coast University tournament. There, the Hoyas took down St. Louis, but lost matchups with Michigan State, South Carolina, and host Florida Gulf Coast. Mackensey Carter, who sports a 2.57 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched, picked up Georgetown's lone win last weekend.
The Pack opens play in Chapel Hill, N.C. Friday against St. Joseph's at 4 p.m.
