ATHENS, Ga. - NC State softball fell 13-4 in five innings today to No. 2 Georgia (10-0) in the final game of the Georgia Softball Classic at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga.
Alyssa Allbritten led the way for NC State (6-4) offensively, going 2-for-3 with a homerun and single while Alyssa Ishibashi notched two RBI in the Pack loss.
With two outs in the first inning, Allbritten put the Pack on the board by sending Morgan Montemayor's pitch deep over the outfield fence for her first homerun of the 2011 season. Bridget Desbois grounded out to end the frame, but not before NC State had taken an early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs.
Georgia countered in the bottom half of the inning when Brianna Hesson knocked a three-run homerun to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead over the Wolfpack.
Alicia Abbott got the Wolfpack going in the second inning, drawing a walk with one out. After a Linzy Rother fielder's choice put her in scoring position, Chelsea Tate ripped a single to drive her in and pull NC State within one run, 3-2. Ishibashi stepped to the plate next and knocked a line drive into the outfield gap to score Rother and Tate to give the Pack a 4-3 advantage.
After three-straight singles loaded the bases for Georgia, senior Player of the Year candidate Taylor Schlopy notched a grand slam, the first of her career, to give the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead.
Kayla Cox, NC State's starter in the circle, was replaced by Peeler in the second frame after giving up seven runs on eight hits in one full inning of work.
Georgia continued garner hits, scoring eight runs off eight hits in the bottom half of the second inning to take an 11-4 lead.
The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 13-4 in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-run homerun by Jennie Auger.
The Wolfpack returns to action Feb. 25, at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. against St. Joseph's at 4 p.m.
