CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State (7-4) softball defeated St. Joseph's (3-4) by a score of 7-6 in the Pack's first game in Chapel Hill, N.C. as a part of the Carolina Classic.
Alyssa Allbritten went 2-for-3 for the Wolfpack, notching one RBI in the victory. Caitlin Dent also posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, blasting her first homerun of the 2011 season in the first inning.
The Pack offense got started early in the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Alyssa Ishibashi once again set the table for the offense, reaching first base after being hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot. After moving to second thanks to an illegal pitch and third on an Allbritten single, Ishibashi scored when Bridget Desbois lifted a sacrifice fly. The next batter, Bethaney Wells, reached on a base hit, which scored Allbritten to give the Pack a 2-0 lead. Dent then stepped to the plate and sent a pitch deep over the outfield wall for a two-run homerun, her first of the 2011 season, to extend the NC State lead to 4-0.
Kayla Cox, the Pack starter in the circle, struck out five of the first seven St. Joseph's batters she faced en route to giving up three runs on two hits in four innings of work.
NC State's offense struck again in the second inning after Chelsea Tate reached first on a St. Joseph's error and was moved into scoring position by a Breanna Andrews sacrifice bunt. After advancing due to multiple illegal pitches, Tate came around to score on an RBI single by Ishibashi, which gave the Pack a 5-0 advantage.
After St. Joseph's loaded the bases in the third inning off of two hit batters and a walk, Monica Aguilar roped a two-out double into right field, plating three runs for the Hawks to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Pack.
In the bottom of the third, Desbois was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch, which gave the Wolfpack a 6-3 lead.
Toni Ann Williford and Allbritten roped back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to extend the NC State advantage to 7-3.
Morgan Peeler came on in relief of Cox in the fifth inning and surrendered three runs on three hits, allowing the Hawks to pull within one run, 7-6.
The Pack returns to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C. against St. Joseph's in the squad's second game of the Carolina Classic.
